One of my goals for 2014 was to make my own lotion. Well, folks, I’ve done it and I LOVE it! Last weekend, I noticed that both my boys as well as myself, had started to get really dry skin. Here in Georgia, the weather has been crazy for the past week. Lows in the single digits! Us Southerns were certainly freaking out over that! 🙂
I thought that was the perfect reason to try this awesome lotion recipe that I found over on Wellness Mama. I tailored the recipe a bit for my boys:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup almond oil
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup beeswax (I grated mine with a cheese grater)
- 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
- A couple of drops of Calming the Child essential oil (you could use lavender if you prefer)
- 8 oz. storage container (I used a mason jar)
Directions:
- Combine ingredients in a pint sized or larger glass jar. I used a smooth mason jar that I found at Target.
- Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
- Cover the jar loosely with lid and place in saucepan.
- The ingredients will start to melt as the water heats. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. Once all ingredients are completely melted, pour into your storage container. This is what it will look like:
- Let lotion cool and solidify before using. (I placed mine in the fridge)
- Use as you would regular lotion.
Keep in mind that since this lotion does not contain any preservatives, it only has a shelf life of about 6 months. This lotion recipe will go on your skin similar to how Aquaphor or Vaseline do. If you prefer you can add 2 tablespoons of shea butter or cocoa butter to the mix to give it a more body butter texture.
I love this lotion! It has already fixed the dry skin problem my boys were having. I also feel better about giving them something that I know hasn’t had a ton of harsh chemicals added to it. Makes my heart happy. 🙂 And Collin’s too.
Have you ever made your own lotion before?

Thank you so much for your support of my little blog!
Thanks! I want to make this for my 18-month-old, Henry. His face is a bit chapped and when I put store-bought baby lotion on it, I think it stung him a little! 🙁
Can you put this in a travel pump container?
Hi Mancy! It will probably be too thick for a pump container. I haven’t tried it so it may be work but I personally think it’ll be too thick. :-/
Hi, if I use olive oil instead if almond oil will it still moisturize the same? Thank you
It should but I haven’t tried it to give you a definite.
