This project was definitely my hubs’ baby. He’d been wanting to spruce up our guest bedroom forever. After we learned that our family was going to grow once more, I gave him the reins to let his creative juices flow. Personally, I think he did an incredible job, as always!
This is the Chest of Drawers from our guest bedroom. Originally white with brass knobs. |
Changing table. This is actually my old vanity that my Grandmother gave me. Originally light wood. |
Former night stand in our guest bedroom. Originally all white. This currently houses my basket with wipes and diapers next to the changing table. |
So how much did our ‘Frugal Nursery’ cost us ? Our nursery project cost us a grand total of $68. How did we manage that? Pretty simple:
- Returns: we cleaned out our garage and my husbands workshop. We ended up returning to Home Depot $180 worth of materials. We used the store credit to apply to our overall purchase. The difference was $68.
- Reuse/Repuropse: we reused some of the furniture that was originally in our guest bedroom. We already had the glider from our first child so we just moved it from Conner’s room to Collin’s.
- Freebies: we got the crib and mattress for free {crib was originally white}. My husband, who is truly amazing, after talking with one of clients, found out that they just wanted to get rid of the crib and mattress they had. It was old and well used, they just needed space and they didn’t have time to try to sell it. So my husband asked if we could have it! Sweet! I also found a ton of cribs on Craigslist and local Facebook yard sale pages that were either free or really dirt cheap! And if you’re looking for new but still cheap, go to Big Lots, they have cribs starting at $60 there!
- Resources: we used our resources. Collin’s bedding was free to us because his Grammy bought it. Originally, we were going to have to pay for some of the cost because this was actually a pretty expensive set. But because my mom is who taught me all about being frugal, she managed to get this whole bedding set for under her budget {70% off! } because she waited for it to go on sale and used coupon codes. {The bedding came from Pottery Barn Kids}
- DIY: my husband did the paneling and we both painted. This saved us a ton on labor! Not to mention it was really fun to build Colin’s room together.

I love the paneling! I really enjoy using old furniture and repurposing it. Furniture can be so expensive! Luckily my daughter’s future “big girl” set was her grandmothers. It just needs a new coat of paint!
Thank you Heather! Its so much fun to find new uses for old things! And that’s awesome that you get your daughter’s grandmother’s set!
What a gorgeous nursery! Lucky baby Collin! And for $68?! That’s absolutely amazing!
Also, I feel like we have the exact same taste in names. We both have a Connor/Conner, and my Caleb was almost Collin, but since our last name starts with an “L”, we thought it might be too many “L’s” and went with Caleb instead. But I LOVE the name Collin. Anyway, fantastic job and I hope you’re having a wonderful week!
~Abby =)
Thank you Abby! We’ve gone so back sand forth with Collin’s name lol. My husband wants to call him by his middle name, Wyatt, since he thinks we’ll get confused.
That is beautiful! I have to start getting my nursery ready for my first one who is due this November. Normally I would go the frugal route and scour Craiglist and Freecycle, but I know my mom was dying to buy her first grandchild furniture so I’m letting her do that (thought I’ll be buying a glider off Craigslist!)
One of my favorite items in my house is this old wooden sideboard I got for free from Freecycle. I repainted it and bought new knobs, giving it a whole new feel. I feel so proud of it everytime I look at it!

What a beautiful nursery. We did paneling in our daugther’s nursery too, and it’s one of my favorite rooms. I love how you did such a great room on a budget.
I love it! I am reusing my daughter’s crib for my new baby boy and would love to paint it from white to black. I am just worried about the baby chewing on it and/or the paint getting chipped up. Have you had any trouble with the paint on the white crib? Just curious.
So far we haven’t but Collin isn’t here yet so I haven’t tested it first hand yet. But I’m planning to get a crib rail guard so he can’t chew up the crib like his big brother did to his.
Cute room, way to use your resources! Congrats on baby #2!
Thank you so much Sarah!
What a beautiful nursery! You guys did a great job! I love that you re-purposed furniture that you had/was given to you and now it looks like it all matches. I love the board and batten on the walls too! Your son is going to love this room!
Thank you so much Carrie! 🙂
I love it! This just goes to show that you don’t need to spend a lot to end up with a space you truly love! Congrats on the new baby!
I found you through Hit Me With Your Best Shot. 🙂
Thank you Kim! 🙂
Love it! I’m also expecting with our first baby and refused to spend money on a changing table – have you seen how expensive those pressed wood pieces are?!? Instead, I had a recent yard sale find that is a dresser from the 1930s. It was in some serious need of DIY love some a few chalk paint colors later and we have a changing table and set of drawers for clothes! Since revealing a picture to a friend, she and a few others have asked that I do a similar project for their nurseries! Baby on a budget should be a series on your blog because I love your advice and will be in need of a lot more info from an experienced budgeting mama!
Thank you Meagan! 🙂 I totally agree – changing tables are stupidly expensive and they out grow them so fast! I love that you scored such an awesome find from a yard sale! Heck yes! 🙂
Wow…that looks fantastic…I can’t believe you only spent $68!
Thank you so much Pat! 🙂
